Writing Coaching
EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY. BUILD YOUR SKILLS.
I offer project-based coaching for middle and high school students who want to spend more time writing and have fun doing it.
Write a novel or short story: Do you have a notebook full of story ideas? Or have you just always wanted to write a novel but don’t know where to start? Work with me on brainstorming, outlining, drafting and revising. We’ll meet once a week to discuss your work and I’ll give you deadlines and feedback to keep you writing!
Study literature: This is college level instruction for students who want a challenge. We’ll read novels and short stories and I’ll teach you how to take notes, to read a text closely and understand the way writers use language. You’ll learn how to write a strong literary analysis essay through multiple drafts. You’ll also improve your vocabulary and learn how to better use literary devices in your own writing.
Polish your essay writing skills: If you read through any magazine or book of essays you’ll quickly realize that the five paragraph essay does not exist outside of high school and college classrooms. A compelling essay has a strong main idea and is focused around that idea, but essay writers can “leap” away from their main idea and return in ways that readers find refreshing, humorous and inventive. I’ll teach you how to stay focused, to support your main idea with details and to bring creativity and fun to the essay writing process. You can work with me on a specific project or we can create a project together.
Explore your creativity! Nobody tells you this, but fun is the secret to good writing. That original spark that generates a story or essay is so important and easy to lose when we’re faced with deadlines and school assignments. I work with students who just want to have fun writing. We’ll do writing exercises, character building exercises, write stories, scenes, plays, comic books, whatever interests you! I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve, have taught every genre of writing and am passionate about the creative process.
